Bharse is a remote village in Nepal, the journey is about two days long from the capital city Kathmandu. Mountains, hills and rivers have to be crossed to get there, the roads are not cemented and there are no barricades along the side of the hills/cliffs making it very difficult and dangerous to travel through. Bharse is an important place for me as I was raised there by my grandparents and spent most of my childhood there, I have vague but happy memories of the place.
Working on this project has made me realise how I have lost connection with my culture and how little I know of my traditions; my parents are not religious or traditional therefore we only celebrate holidays and other occasions when necessary. This includes owning little to none of the traditional clothing or jewellery. Due to the absence of the cultural knowledge in my family, I lack knowledge and understanding of what the colours represents. Because, I am in tuned with western culture, I feel like a foreigner in my own traditional dress.
I have used portraiture as a medium to feel connected to a culture I have been disconnect from a young age, which allowed me to explore the fantasy of being part of something special.
