The aim of my project is to explore a mother and her child’s intimacy in the Nepalese culture and how that affects the younger generations. As with many Asian cultures, Nepalese parents have always been strict with their children, and they must obey the rules set by the parent. In this type of upbringing, it is difficult for a child to create bond and trust with grown-ups. Without trust, the relationship between the mother and her child falls apart, which has been happening in my family for generations. My grandmother favoured her sons over her daughters (my mother), she did not show love and affection towards her daughter. From this experience, my mother has struggled to show love and affection toward me and my sisters. We have struggled to overcome the distance between us.
Our culture has been avoiding talking about intimacy, love and affection for several decades and I would like to address that through my images. they brush off these topics by saying phrases such as ‘it’s tough love’ or ‘we only do this to make you stronger or independent’.
